How to become a chief of staff

The Fastest-Growing Role in Business Needs Its Own Curriculum

Most people become a chief of staff by accident: a trusted manager, consultant, or founder's early hire gets pulled into the role with no formal training in it. The Chief of Staff MBA does the opposite. It treats the chief of staff role as a discipline in its own right, with its own curriculum: running a company's operating cadence, driving cross-functional projects, executive communication, and being the person a CEO or founder trusts to get things done.

Nearly 60% of chiefs of staff already hold an MBA. Elton builds that MBA 1-on-1: instead of a fixed cohort moving through a shared syllabus, your professors and coach design your Chief of Staff MBA around the company, team, or executive you are actually working for or want to work for.

No GMAT required. Start immediately. Full refund within your first 30 days.

Who this is for

Built for the People Who Get Things Done

The Current Chief of Staff

You already hold the title, learned it on the job, and want the formal business training and credential to match the responsibility you already carry.

The Founder's First Hire

You are a founder's or executive's most trusted early hire, doing a bit of everything. You want the operations, finance, and strategy fundamentals to grow into a formal chief of staff or operating role.

The Executive Assistant Moving Up

You support a senior executive today and want the business fluency and strategic skills to move from supporting decisions to shaping them.

The Management Consultant

You want to move from advising companies from the outside to running the operating cadence of one from the inside, as the right hand of a CEO or founder.

The Operator Ready for the C-Suite Orbit

You have run teams or projects and are ready for a role that sits closest to the top of the organization, driving execution across every function.

The Aspiring Chief of Staff

You do not hold the title yet but know this is the role you want next. Your team builds the bridge from where you are to a real chief of staff seat.

What you master

The Six Domains of a Great Chief of Staff

Your professors teach the same six domains every Elton 1-on-1 MBA student masters — business systems, strategy, technology, marketing, team dynamics, and personal mastery — through the lens of the chief of staff role, plus the disciplines unique to this concentration:

  • Operating Cadence & Execution — running the meetings, reviews, and rhythms that keep a company or team on track
  • Cross-Functional Project Management — driving initiatives that cut across departments with no direct authority over them
  • Executive Communication — writing and presenting the way a CEO or founder needs to see information: fast, clear, and decision-ready
  • Strategic Prioritization — deciding what the executive and the organization should focus on, and what to say no to
  • Organizational Diagnosis — reading where a company or team is breaking down and designing the fix
  • Trusted Advisorship — building the judgment and discretion that earns a seat in the room where decisions get made
