PhD by Publication: An Online Doctorate Designed for the 21st Century

Most doctoral programs make you wait years before you write anything the world will read. We do the opposite. From day one, you work with a dedicated advisor to research, write, and submit peer-reviewed papers — and those papers are your dissertation.

This model has various names, a Research Doctorate, a PhD by Publication or a PhD by Accumulation, but all of them amount to the same thing. Your doctorate builds up paper-by-paper of publishable original research instead of resting on a single all-or-nothing dissertation defense at the end of a decade.

Introducing Elton's doctorate

Earn Your Doctorate Through What Matters Most: Your Research

Transform your expertise into a doctoral degree while building the publication record that launches academic careers. At Elton University, we believe your research should work for you—not the other way around.

Elton's PhD is a PhD by Publication. This means that in place of a dissertation, you write three papers accepted for publication at reputable journals, an in-depth summary of your research, and complete a viva voce (oral examination). All at your own pace.

This approach, which is common in Europe, has three major advantages: freedom, pace, and speed. Without classes to attend or the limitations of departments, you are free to choose the precise research topic that interests you and that you think is important. You can move at your own pace to research, write, and submit your papers. Depending on your pace, in as few as 2 years, you can graduate with a PhD and 3 citations—an achievement that takes many other scholars 4-10 years.

Phase 1 (18-48 months)

Research & Publication

Work directly with experienced Elton advisors and professors, as well as subject matter experts in your field, to develop, conduct, and publish your research. You'll receive comprehensive support including:

  • Shape research questions and methodology that stand up to peer scrutiny
  • Choose the right journals and navigate submission strategy
  • Strengthen your argument, structure, and scholarly contribution at the conceptual level
  • Revise and redirect a manuscript after rejection, so a "no" from one journal never stalls your progress
  • Kick off career planning and search

Phase 2 (6-12 months)

Completion & Defense

Once candidates have accumulated three original research papers, they next assemble those papers into a thesis with an introduction and conclusion, and finally complete a viva voce (oral defense). During this phase:

  • Elton advisors continue supporting your journey
  • Write a thesis made up of an introduction, summary, and conclusion and your 3 published papers
  • Complete your viva voce (oral defense) with confidence
  • Continue your career search or accelerate your capacities in your present career

Our program philosophy

Publish And Prosper: A Different Approach

Traditional doctoral programs operate on a "publish or perish" mentality—a high-pressure model that prioritizes quantity over quality and burns out talented researchers. We believe in Publish and Prosper. This means:

  • Research that builds your career, not just your CV
  • Publications that contribute meaningfully to your field
  • Support systems that encourage curiosity and excellence, not anxiety
  • A pathway that respects your time, finances, and professional goals

Traditional PhD vs. PhD by Publication

Traditional PhD Programs (Thesis by Dissertation)

The conventional doctoral model was designed decades ago for full-time students with funding packages. While rigorous and well-established, these programs often require significant sacrifices in time, income, and flexibility.

  • 6-10 years to completion
  • Teaching requirements take time from research
  • Graduate with few or no publications
  • First publication often in year 3-4
  • $30,000-50,000+ per year (and loss of salary during those years)
  • Must relocate to university location
  • Rigid research requirements set by your department and advisor, not by you

Elton Research Doctorate (Thesis by Accumulation)

We've reimagined the doctorate for the modern researcher—prioritizing what actually matters for your career while eliminating unnecessary barriers. Excellent research can happen anywhere, and publications are the true currency of academic success.

  • 2-4 years to completion
  • Zero teaching obligations
  • Graduate with as many as 3+ publications
  • Publications begin immediately
  • Affordable tuition — less than half of traditional PhD program tuition and possible to work while you learn
  • Study from anywhere in the world
  • Pick your own research topic and move at your own pace

Frequently Asked Questions

Elton can support research across the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and professional disciplines. Elton currently cannot provide physical laboratory space to students, and this limits the ability to conduct research in many of the physical sciences. During your application, we'll confirm whether we have appropriate resources, and advisors in your specific field.

Most successful candidates dedicate 5-25 hours weekly during the research/publication phase. Working more generally leads to a quicker completion of the program, and working less often leads to slower completion.

Rejection is a normal part of academic publishing. Your advisors will help you to do everything you can to get your papers accepted. When you receive a rejection, your advisors will help you revise, reframe, and redirect manuscripts to different journals. Your Elton advisor's publishing strategy and editorial support will significantly increase your journal acceptance rates.

Possibly. Publications completed within the past 5 years that fall directly in your area of research could count toward your requirement. This is evaluated during admission.

The only strict requirements from Elton are that you exhibit the ability to conduct the research itself. Elton will issue you a master's degree in your first year, and a PhD when you complete a thesis that includes your three accepted papers. If you do not hold a bachelor's or a master's degree, you should still contact Elton and apply. Elton can award you a master's degree while you are beginning your research and your first publication can function as your master's thesis.

No. If you don't hold one, you complete our integrated Master's degree alongside your doctoral research. Your first paper counts as your master's thesis. So it is a combined MSc/MA & PhD with one advisor, no separate application, and no added time to your four-year enrollment window.
